It’s finally time for another installment of I’m Right, You’re Wrong, where I use the internet to work out disputes with loved ones. Because I can’t get on the Jerry Springer Show.
The rules are that I will present you with a dispute, but anonymously, so as not to influence you to agree with my position and shun the other one, and then you weigh in. Ready? (Oh right, on the internet, no one can hear you screen and/or say “yes, I’m ready!”)
Dilemma: In the common sign-off, XOXO, does X= kiss and O= hug, or vice versa? (BTW, I just came up with a name for a hit TV show: Miami Vice Versa.)
Disagreers: Marinka and Some people who are wrong.
Position One: X is a kiss because when you kiss, your lips make an X and when you hug, you arms make a circle.
Position Two: X is a hug because the saying is “hugs and kisses” not “kisses and hugs”.
What do you think? Is it obvious that there is an answer, or is this question just one of many that you haven’t considered in your life?
To assist with this dilemma, I did some research, which I think is really helpful:
XOXO or hugs and kisses, a way to express affection (either x’s or o’s may represent kisses or hugs)
Please weigh in!
xoxo,
Marinka

You’re welcome.
X= kiss, O = hug
I say “kisses and hugs” but it’s entirely possible I retrained myself to say that at a young age because otherwise it made no sense to write XOXO.

Okay, okay, but the X could be arms and the 0 could be a mouth. Please stop making me think about stuff.

X=Kiss
O=Hug
It’s not supposed to make any sense, by the way. It just IS.
X = kiss. When you write “xxxx,” it means “kisses,” unless of course you are referring to porn, but of course you would never do that.

I’m truly shocked. Always thought it was X=hug & O=kiss, like the saying “hugs & kisses.”
X – Kiss
O- Hug
Except when playing tic-tac-toe
and reversing the order OX is reserved for just me and my huZband 😉
X=Kiss
O=Hug
I always write XXOOXO. Two kisses, two hugs and one of each.
I do it the French way : XxX
Three kisses, no hugs.

Position one the only position. It’s generous of you to be so patient and generous with your platform.
X=kisses
Don’t know what O is for.
X=kisses
Don’t know what O is for.
All is in the eyes of beholder.
The O is the circle you make with your arms when you put them around somebody.
X stands for kisses because X marks the spot and kisses are specifically planted.
You are right once again Marinka!

I don’t understand why people who are total strangers and people who’ve known and liked or loved each other for ages both use this same sign-off. It’s meaningless and terribly uncomfortable and even though I think it should banned, you’re position is, of course, the right one.
The fact that people even consider that the O isn’t a hug baffles me. My whole world view is askew. Tell those people to stop.
